What’s the point of a conductor anyway?
Many musicians have wondered this in their years of playing in orchestras, singing in choirs or creating roles on the opera stage. Three authorities guide me, the composer(s) and librettist(s) inspire me to share the miracle of organised sounds, my teachers taught me that the buck stops on the podium, and my years behind the keyboard in the opera rehearsal room have shown me that militant kindness, egoless sharing and faithful service to one’s collaborators yields the most ecstatic and profound results. Conducting is an immense privilege and joy.
